Culture

From 20–24 August, two of our learners, Abulele Sontangane and Ntlantla January, represented the province at the National Oral History Competition held in East London. We are especially thrilled to share that Abulele Sontangane was placed first nationally in the Young Historian category; a remarkable accomplishment that truly reflects her dedication and skill.

The annual Speech and Drama Festival took place from 18–20 August, with learners from as young as Grade R to Grade 12 taking part. Performances ranged from individual poems and choral verses to powerful monologues, reflecting the confidence of our learners and the appreciation for language and culture. We extend our thanks to St Monica’s for organising and hosting this special event.

Sport

Our u11 and u13 boys’ hockey teams took on KJS on 18 August. Despite their efforts, they lost their matches. The same day, however, brought better results on the soccer field, where both our u11 and u13 boys’ teams beat BVC 2–0.

On 20 August our u11 boys defeated Focused 2–0, while our u13 boys dominated their match with a 6–0 victory. Our 1st girls’ soccer team also produced a spectacular performance against Focused, sealing a 7–0 win.

Our 1st netball team competed in the SPAR 1st Netball Fast 5 Challenge on 23 August and played with skill and determination. Our girls recorded impressive victories against KC (6–3), BVC (11–0), ZSS (8–3), SMDS (8–0) and STRS (6–3). Despite a narrow 2–3 defeat to MHS and a loss to SASS (4–13), our team fought their way through to the semi-finals, where they faced MHS again and narrowly lost 7–10. We are proud as they secured third place overall.

On the same day, our 7’s rugby team took part in the Port Natal 7’s Rugby Tournament. They lost against Linpark (14–19) but defeated Kuswag (17–12). They then went through to the Shield Final, where they beat Port Natal (15–5) and were placed third overall in the tournament.

Also on 23 August, our 1st boys soccer team competed in the Bergview Soccer Festival. They fought hard across their fixtures, losing 0–1 to BVC and KC, drawing 1–1 with Focused, and beating SMDS 1–0.
