King Edward HS at Voortrekker Tournament

On Saturday the 24 March, King Edward High School (KEHS) travelled to Pietermaritzburg to participate at the Voortrekker Festival.

Our first Hockey team made their presence felt at the festival. With fourteen teams participating on the day the girls were very excited to play some good hockey. They were scheduled to play six games in their pool, and the results were as follows: KEHS vs Durban North won 3-0, KEHS vs Greytown won 1-0, KEHS vs Voortrekker drew 0-0, KEHS vs Sarel Cillers won 4-0, KEHS vs Newcastle won 3-0 and KEHS vs Empangeni lost 0-1. We then made the final against Hillcrest High and unfortunately lost 0-1. The girls played really well together and showed great heart even during the heat and fatigue and we are excited for the upcoming season. Well done girls! You can be proud.

Our first Netball team played six games, lost three, drew two and won one. We then went through to the play offs and lost 6-2 against Kingsway. We came fifth in Pool A. The girls put up a great performance, showing how much they have improved this year.

The KEHS U14 Rugby played Ladysmith. The game was fast paced and much flair was displayed by both sides. KEHS achieved a comfortable lead of two tries but conceded one to bring the game into balance. The second half saw KEHS scoring again, but Ladysmith did not give up. The final score was 31-10 in favour of KEHS. We look forward to some good games in the coming season. Thank you to Ladysmith for a game played in great spirit.

Our U/16 rugby team played against a very big team from Durban North College. Despite being up against it KEHS refused to be intimidated by the enormity of the task and took the lead with a try in the first fifteen minutes of the match. After being held off bravely by the KEHS side, the Durban North team struck back with a try in the last move of the first half to lead by seven points to five at half-time. Durban North went on to score two more tries early in the first ten minutes of the second half. It was looking like one-way traffic at that stage but KEHS picked themselves up and scored their second try with five minutes of the match remaining. Unfortunately, this comeback was not enough and Durban North High School were able to secure a victory by twenty-one points to ten. It was a brave performance by the KEHS side, despite the loss, and the whole team can be proud of a fine effort.

The First Rugby team played against Hillcrest. The teams were evenly matched and it turned out to be a fine match. The game was quite physical and many impressive tackles were made. Our boys created a lot of pressure but could regrettably not turn the pressure into points. The final score was 17-5 in favour of Hillcrest. Well played, both teams.
