Matat School Scoops Prizes
King Edward High School in Matatiele took first and second places in The Witness Schools Quiz held in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday. The winning team (from left), Caitlyn Harrison, Nandu Nair, Tumi Magwa and Washington Wachira, were awarded bursaries and thousands of rands in cash prizes from The Witness, the South African Institute of International Affairs and Varsity College. Carter High School in Pietermaritzburg came third. The quiz attracted entries from 29 schools with 46 high school teams participating.
Questions were selected from Witness newspapers supplied to the schools over three weeks and covered a variety of topics from international, regional and national news, sport, politics and popular culture. The quizmaster also grilled the audience, including Mayor Chris Ndledla, on their general knowledge. Witness managing editor Yves Vanderhaeghen, who opened the quiz, the eighth of its kind, stressed the importance of accumulating knowledge throughout one's life and said he hoped the participants would continue to read newspapers.
