Noncedo

King Edward High School continues to honour its commitment to the Noncedo Project located outside Matatiele. The Grade 11 class (as part of their Life Orientation Curriculum) spent a day during the last week of the second term at the project putting words into action. Contributions came from the Grade 11 class, KEHS, Huisgenoot/You (who came onboard after a request by Mrs R. Viviers to the magazine's Ubuntu Project) and Sirrah Hardware.

The typical icy winter morning was unable to quell the enthusiasm of the KEHS learners, a group of whom immediately started work on the vegetable garden. Holes were dug and poles were planted in order to fence the vegetable patch. The unrelenting soil soon separated the men from the boys and the women from the girls. Another group dug out and assembled the sandpit which had been donated by Huisgenoot/You. Two of the boys mounted curtain rails while the girls hung up the donated curtains. Some of the girls prepared a meal for the children who were at school, while others sorted out the clothing that had been donated.

Budding handymen painted the roof after sealing leaks in it. With the help of Mr Ken Kietzmann, the frame and front door were replaced by a much needed stable door. Under the watchful eye of Mr Ralph Fredericks, the boys mixed cement and built a base for the new water tank. The previously donated swings were repaired and the outside toilets gained doors with locks.

Bricks left over from the water tank base were used to pave an area at the front door. Ralph took the time to teach the boys how to throw a cement slab at the backdoor. Door locks were also replaced. When the Noncedo children arrived back from school they were treated to a delicious meal and undivided attention from the KEHS learners. The delight and appreciation on their faces was a sight to behold, as they were entertained with games and educational activities.

Soccer balls, hoola hoops, ropes and tennis balls donated by Ms E. van Heerden were then inspanned by Mrs Viviers as she led the Noncedo ladies in a 'Ball skills Routine'. The entire exercise proved a worthwhile, enriching one. Valuable life lessons were learned by all the Grade 11's who had the privilege of taking part in the Project.

Special thanks must go to Mrs Viviers for continuing to drive this project as well as the following generous donors – Huisgenoot/You Ubuntu Project, Sirrah Hardware, KLM Tanks, Wholesale Hardware Distributors, Neville Viviers and NP Filling Station.
