KEHS Inter-House Gala

On 5 February, a relatively small group of swimmers proudly took to the pool at the KEHS Inter-House Gala. What we lacked in numbers was more than compensated for by commitment and outstanding team spirit. The event was fun-filled and exciting, with learners cheering passionately and swimmers giving their all in every race. Graham House dominated the competition, winning both the Primary and High School divisions, while Melville House claimed the coveted Spirit Cup for their unwavering enthusiasm and support.

Cricket

Our younger cricketers took to the field in the U7 and U8 mini cricket matches against SPC on 5 February. In the U7 match, our boys posted a total of 61 runs for 4 wickets, while SPC responded with 50 runs for 3 wickets, resulting in a victory for SPC due to mini cricket rules. Our U8 team faced a tougher challenge, scoring 39 runs for 5 wickets, while SPC managed 51 runs for 3 wickets. Despite the result, our U8 players continued to grow in confidence.
Our U9 hard ball cricket team also competed against SPC. SPC set a formidable target of 173 runs in 20 overs for the loss of 1 wicket. Our team battled bravely in response, scoring 71 runs in 20 overs for 5 wickets. The match provided valuable experience as this was their first hard ball match.

KEHS Chess Festival

On Saturday, we proudly hosted the KEHS Chess Festival, welcoming 68 learners from six schools; King Edward High School, St Monica’s, Bergview College, Focused High School, Mary Ralake and Tholang Senior Secondary School. This impressive turnout reflects the strong interest and talent for chess within our town of Matatiele.

Chess plays a vital role in developing critical thinking skills, particularly in gateway subjects such as Mathematics and Physical Sciences, while also teaching important values like sportsmanship; a quality that was evident throughout the tournament. We congratulate all participants, as taking part is in itself a significant achievement. Craig Chibaya from Mary Ralake emerged as the champion of the day, an achievement made even more special as he was also last year’s winner at the tournament hosted by Focused High School. Honourable mentions also go to Poelo Hoffman from Focused High School, who secured second place, and Oratile Monamatha from Mary Ralake, who finished third. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Sondela, who generously sponsored the food, and to Ms Magadla who ensured all participants were well fed.
