KEHS Interhouse Gala: 2020

The last day of January dawned brightly, boding well for KEHS's annual Interhouse Gala. The sun shon, the spectators sang, the teachers timed and the swimmers swam with enthusiasm. The day ended with Graham House taking both the spirit cup and the coveted title of winning House. Well done to all who participated and made the day an enjoyable experience.

“Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education.” - David Polis

Leadership development is one of the building blocks of our schooling model at King Edward High School. We take immense pride in the moulding and guiding of our young minds. The 2020 prefect group came together to start the year in the best possible way with friends, in the mountains and with a challenge to overcome.

We took our young leaders to spend some time in the Garden Castle Wilderness Area. Having to be totally self-sufficient and carrying our own hiking packs, we explored various life lessons while hiking in this beautiful part of the Southern Drakensburg.

We had fun while crossing gushing rivers, abseiling, laughing and hiking. Our lectures and discussions were held in the stony grip of Pillar Cave overlooking the beautiful Mashai Pass, giving the prefect camp an edge never before experienced.

The physical effort required to navigate and go about daily routine while on a hike of this nature ensured that our students were constantly being pushed out of their comfort zones. We facilitated new challenges and problem solving activities, ensuring personal growth through expansion of their reference experiences.

A paradigm change is what we are aiming towards. By shifting expectations and boundaries as we face our fears, the 2020 prefect group is ready to shift perceptions and limitations.

Congratulations to the Matric class of 2019 who performed admirably in their examinations. For the 7th consecutive year, KEHS achieved a 100% pass rate. This ensured that we appeared in the National Senior Certificate School Performance Report, as one of only four schools in the Eastern Cape to achieve a 100% pass rate for the past 5 years.

The exceptional Bachelors rate (Matric Exemption) of 93% reflects that 39 of our 42 learners can go to university. The other three learners achieved Diploma passes and will also be able to proceed to tertiary institutions. The quality of the results was excellent and 58 distinctions were attained.

Aleta Sibi, the Dux, brought honour to the school and district by achieving first place in the entire Eastern Cape. Her aggregate of 95% comprised the following marks: English 92%, Afrikaans 93%, Mathematics 93%, Life Orientation 98%, Physical Science 100%, Life Sciences 96% and Accounting 94%. At the glittering provincial prize-giving the other top learners in the province threw their blazers on the red carpet in recognition of this remarkable achievement.

Other top achievers from King Edward High School included Hannah Hansen who also received a full house of seven distinctions and Aditya Nair and Pabala Letuka who achieved five distinctions each. Hannah and Aditya were also invited to the Provincial Prize-giving where they received trophies and substantial bursaries, for being placed first and second in the district respectively.

King Edward High School is proud of all our Matriculants. We will continue to serve our community with distinction in 2020.

On Wednesday and Thursday this past week our Grade R classes visited the Rhino Bakery. This is always one of the highlights of the year and the learners thoroughly enjoy every minute of it. The bakery manager, Mr M Lempe, welcomed us all and each learner was kitted out with an apron and appropriate head gear. Then the excitement began! Each child received their own piece of dough and decorations to make their very own gingerbread man.

Afterwards Mr M Lempe gave them a tour of the bakery, explaining how the ovens and machinery worked. They saw the bread baking and their gingerbread men taking shape. Afterwards they returned to school and enjoyed their baked goods. A big thank you is extended to Mr G van Staaden, manager of Rhino, and Mr M Lempe for accommodating us and making this outing such a pleasant one.
