Congratulations to our athletics team which was placed 3rd out of 13 schools at this meeting. Special mention must be made of Caleb Sweetnam who was Junior Victor Ludorum and Ethan Duminy who was runner-up Senior Victor Ludorum. Joshua Sweetnam was best in his age group.

Thirty-five of our athletes were selected to the Durban South Christian Schools team which will participate in the KZN Christian Schools Championships.

August 6 found forty-five very excited Grade R learners experiencing their very first official school bus trip. We travelled down to the South Coast to watch The Lion King at the Shelley Beach Mall. We decided to take a quick nibble under the beautiful palm trees on Margate beach before embarking on our journey to Shelley Beach. For some children this was the first visit to the movie house and to crown it all, in 3D! When everyone was kitted out with glasses, popcorn and juice...it was movie time!

The teachers absolutely loved watching the facial expressions and the instinctive flinches as 3D birds, insects and animals came flying and running our way. It was a wonderfully beautiful movie for all to see, with amazing scenes and of course an amazing storyline. Our babies had such a great time! Thanks to Kevin and Richard, we arrived back home safely, exhausted but exhilarated.

The first and second of August found the whole of King Edward High School, not in the classrooms, but rather out on the field of King Edward Park. Both days dawned icy, but the sun soon chased away the cold and the clouds. The houses, Graham and Melville turned out in droves – red and blue dotting the field and stands.

Quite a few records were broken, some of note were the U19 Girls’ discus, shotput and javelin records – all three set twenty-five years ago, and all three broken this year by Kayla Harris. Another long-standing record that Aaron Lombard broke was the U19 Boys’ discus record, set in 1966 by Eugene Hayes. Aaron added another five metres to the record – making a formidable record that may last longer than the previous one of fifty-three years.

Both houses raced, threw, jumped and fell for the upper hand, but all in all, when the sun set – Graham was victorious, once again, winning in both the Senior Primary and the High School. Melville however was not to be outdone – taking the Spirit Cup triumphantly.

The Victor and Victrix Ludorums are as follows:

  • SP Junior Victrix Ludorum – Thabisa Mdebuka
  • SP Junior Victor Ludorum – Caleb Sweetnam
  • SP Senior Victrix Ludorum – Emma Rawlins
  • SP Senior Victor Ludorum – Lunathi Nyingwa
  • HS Junior Victrix Ludorum – Kiandre Jacquire
  • HS Junior Victor Ludorum – Blessing Chinzete
  • HS Senior Victrix Ludorum – Kayla Harris
  • HS Senior Victor Ludorum – Justin Nel

Hearty congratulations to each athlete who participated. Warm thanks must be extended to each student helper who assisted, the coaches and teachers as well as the event organisers.
